As my friend used to say, "most of the people stay in the middle, it's warm in there". Sometimes it's too hard to pick a side either because the situation is not clear enough, or you have a lot on the edge, so let me put it this way, you gonna lose if you stayed in the middle.
Scenario 1:
You are in a good shape, you are not going to lose anything but someone somewhere else is going to lose everything, and for argument sake, let's assume you know that but you don't know who. And to heat things up, you got only two choices, one will give you something that you eagerly want but not a necessity like a new lamborghini or a smoking hot lady (in a lamborghini), on the other hand, you will not lose anything but you will save someone's life, that will be drastically ruined if you picked up the car or the lady. Not complicated enough? Well, you don't have to pick one, you can just stay in the middle. What will you do? If your first thought was to save the man, you're 90% hypocrite, and there's only 10% chance that you are a true angle on earth. And if you have thought about the lady in the car, you're normal human being. However, if you have stayed in the middle, there's something wrong about you!
A typical human being, will first think about what he can get, that's the strategic plan that we used to follow for thousands of year. You're not responsible for the loss that other man faced, and you'll compensate him by feeling sorry and a lot of compassion or remorse. Only a small fraction of people will -for different reasons- sacrifice that hot lady to save this anonymous man, but even those will do so to feel better, to atone for their sins, or to go to heaven, anyway, they are doing this for another self attainment, but a noble one. If you choose to stay in the middle, you're sick. Your are not going to lose anything if you have saved the man, and you didn't win anything neither. Whether you're too coward to reclaim the car or the lady, or you're a psychopath who love to let people suffer. DON'T STAY IN THE MIDDLE.
Scenario 2:
You are riding the lamborghini beside the hot lady, and then you have been stopped for violating the speed limit. The officer was kind and insane at the same time, he gave you three options; 1. you will lose your car (the hot lady will stay free) and you'll spend 5 years in jail. 2. you'll get away with it, but the hot lady beside you will spend the next 10 years rotting in prison. 3. just say nothing, but you and the lady will spend 5 year in prison. What will you choose? If you have picked option 1, you're a normal human being (congratulations). And if you decided to say goodbye to the lady and picked option 2, you're a criminal, but this is not abnormal, many people will do terrible things to save their lives (still they are criminals). The only mystery here, is why on earth should anyone choose the middle ground? You're not getting any better by doing this, you'll only make someone else suffer, I can't find any set of conditions that will make this option logical. DON'T STAY IN THE MIDDLE.
Before I end this, I have to say that I have chosen extreme situations, and for some, there's many situations where it's okay to stay in the middle, no serious harm or gain. What I believe is that in any situation you have to choose one side, even if you have picked the wrong one, but picking itself is a good practice, maybe next time you'll do it right, and maybe not. Middle grounds are only warm because people are stacking out there.
